Porch Portraits

The Porch Project is a reaction to the enforced isolation of the coronavirus period. Refusing to allow physical distance to break the community bonds he constructed for years, Porch Project photographer Roger Hoover picked up his camera and walked down the sidewalk, photographing his neighbors from a safe distance.

The portraits are an intimate freeze-frame of a world historic moment, told by the faces of those who live it. Though many photographers have joined the Porch Project movement, Hoover’s series is different in many aspects: he portrays his subjects with an intentional distance that begs the viewer to take a closer look, collects their stories, and is following up with the subjects over a longer period of time with closer, more intimate portraits scheduled a year from the quarantine period.
